Measuring Success

I believe in two maxims that can seem contrary to each other.

What gets measured gets managed.

Not everything that’s meaningful can be measured.

People tend to default to external comparisons like, “Who has more money?” This is sad because it’s not meaningful and it’s not really manageable. Someone will always “have more” or “be better” than you.

The difference (the delta) that’s meaningful and measurable is the change in yourself; compared to your past self.

Success should only be a personal measurement. The pursuit of self improvement is the pursuit of happiness.

That’s a meaningful measurement worth managing.
